No,
this is not a picture from a guide book! This is OUR photo from Machu Picchu
taken on June 25, 2002.
Yes,
we had to pinch ourselves several times to make sure we were not
dreaming.
(The sugar top on the far side is called Wayala Picchu and some of the
photos later are taken from this top - Carl, Erik and Gustav climbed it,
Göran and Catrine had to turn back, it was SO steep and scary).

Carl, Catrine, Gustav, Erik and Göran just back from a
hike at Tambopata Research Center, in the Amazon Basin lowland, in the
south eastern part of Peru. |
 |
Our travel route;
Arriving Lima (1) on June 16, then of to the jungle town of
Puerto Maldonado (2). Several hour up river to Posada Amazonas and
Tambopata
Research center.
A week later, flight to Cuzco (3) in time for Cuzco's yearly
highlight; Inti Raymi.
Train to Machu Picchu (4), a few days in the Sacred
Valley (5).
Train to Puno and Lake Titicaca (6).
Boat and bus to La Paz, Bolivia (7).
Air home via Santa Cruz and Miami on July 6, 2002 after
3 weeks. |
The loge at Tambopata Research Center
The village of Inferno.
The lobby at Pasada Amazonas.
In the river boat on route to TRC.
Trail map at TRC.
Early morning looking for Giant Sea Otters.
Carl and Göran 30 meter (90 feet) above the ground.
One of many walks with our guide.

Aleyda, our outstanding personal guide at
the stay at the research center. She took us on walks 3-4 times a day, starting
at 4:30 in the morning.
This spider was spinning a beautiful web.
|
There was a lot of beautiful butterflies.
|
Göran, Catrine, Erik, Carl, Gustav and one of the
guides, Aldo.
A swim in the swift Tambopata river - the piranha stayed
away...
|
Waking back to the boat one morning from the clay lick.
|
A flower outside our "window". Since there was
no walls in our rooms, just a mosquito net over the bed, it's hard to talk
about a "window"...
|
Erik and Gustav checking out monkeys and macaws from the
top of a tower near the Palm Swamp.
|
Breakfast at the loge. Fresh fruit and delicious food
every day.
|
This macaw was found an orphanage when the macaw project
started in 1992. It was feed by humans and now has a "wild"
mate, but comes back to the loge now and then for a snack.

Gustav and his socks.

An Inca street in Cuzco.

Pre Inti Raymi festivities in Cuzco (more photos form
Inti Raymi will follow when we get our paper photos scanned.)

This is taken by Carl on top of Wayna Picchu. To the
left are the agricultural terraces, to the right are the living quarters and temples.
At the top left corner is the Inca trail from Cuzco.
|
Gustav, Erik and Carl on top of the world (with nothing
underneath).
|
Perfect aligned windows and walls.
|

This nice couple from San Paulo, Brazil, was on a South
American jeep safari. We later saw their stickers on the Peru/Bolivian
border.

Pisac, built by the Spanish in 15??

A girl at the train station
|
|

At the market square on a peninsula in
Lake Titicaca, were we got stranded for most of a day in a storm. The
women were trading and selling their handcraft and produce from their
farms, such as potation, corn, beans, eggs and more.

All married women wears this beautiful
square hat. Unmarried girls and women wears a soft hat.
(Catrine has it on the wall in the living room...)
